Heads out of the sand ??

I went to bed at 11pm last night and as I was settling down under my quilt a series of "bangs" started.

          Mmmmm – fireworks or gunshots?

Moments later I realised they were celebratory gunshots* fired into the air as car horns started blaring and people were out in the street cheering.

Forty years ago this area was destroyed by the riots after Martin Luther King's assassination; last night people were partying in the same streets!

93% of the vote in DC was for Obama  – who are the 7% ?

* is there any greater oxymoron than "celebratory gunshots"??

I took this photo in Curtin Springs,  Northern Territory in Australia

  1. I am so glad that I am here during this history making time…. but I can probably do without lying in bed wondering if I am hearing gunshots or fireworks! LOL.Thanks re the photo – emus are funky birds!

  2. The interesting part is how much the old guard of black politicians do not like him but for what reason??? but it should be interesting how long they give him before he comes under fire! maybe even shotgun fire from your neighborhood!Love the birds (emus) I could of had some of them here when they were trying to get people to raise them for meat around here! …… Hope you get a good nights sleep tonight… it is only deer hunting season here so you only hear high powered rifles during the day

  3. My you are in the thick of it, aren't you?
I can't help but hope that in the next 4-8 years that having a man of mixed race In the White House will give some hope to the folks with the guns–that there might be another way of living their lives.

  4. I ate emu for the first time last year when I was out in Alice Springs. I had a "mixed" grill which was crocodile, kangaroo, emu and camel. I had not had emu or camel until then. My mother used to cook kangaroo tail soup (stew) when I was a kid and I had crocodile the first time when I was about 20. I am not a very big "meat" eater so I wouldn't really go over the top about any of them.

  5. At first I really thought I was confusing shots with fireworks…. but they do have a different sound. The next day the Washington Post reported the shots (I couldn't find the article when I wrote this post) and also on a local blog board. Today a guy who lives not far from me came into the office and asked "did you hear the gunshots on Tuesday night?" Yes, I would like to see these kids given some hope that their lives don't have to be all about guns, drugs and power struggles.

  6. Ha ha LOL…. It totally cracks me up every time an American mispronounces emu. It looks so simple to us, Mind you, the way I pronounce "schedule" has them rolling on the floor with laughter.

  7. I would like to see a little more gun control – especially in cities. Emus are not very friendly birds but they are really curious. It is a really cool sight to see them lurching across a paddock.

  8. I think the result has helped America's image around the world and that's a start – but you are right – he is going to have a tough couple of years as there is a lot to repair.

  9. What a neat picture…..lol re the oxymoron!!And I'm really late getting here, but HOOOOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!I was in high school when most of that horrible upheaval took place; I was 17 in 1968 — the memories are VERY clear and scary —I hope things will be good now– it's time…..YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Oh clever you – you were the only one who commented on my oxymoron! LOL. I was 11 and we had only just got electricity where I lived (but no TV) so I'm not sure that I was even aware of the news. The area is starting to come together – slowly!
